  4. Here's a modification that I developed for the Icom R8500 shortwave
  5. receiver.

  8. Operating the Icom R8500 in other contries.

  10. Caution:  Monitoring Cellular frequencies is illegal in the U.S. 
  11.  
  12. If your traveling abroad and you want to re-program your R8500 to match 
  13. the version in that country.  Use the table below.

  42. Remove the top cover and locate the main PC board (it's to the rear or
  43. the
  44. chassis and holds the speech option, see the operators manual).  R516,
  45. R517
  46. and R518  is located in the right hand corner inside the small metal
  47. can. 
  48. There will be 4 adjacent resistor positions with 2 positions populated 
  49. (R517 & R518)the top position is unknown.  The small metal can is
  50. located  
  51. on the right hand side of the main board.  R455 is located below and to
  52. the
  53. left of J12 (the speech module connector).  R455 is also unpopulated and
  54. it's to the left of R140.  
  55.  
  56. If you can't find a 603 size surface mounted resistor, carefully
  57. unsolder 
  58. an exsisting resistor and re-populate it in another position.  R455 can
  59. be 
  60. replaced  with a zero Ohm resistor by shorting the position with a fine 
  61. stran of wire that was taken from a ribbon cable.

  63. After the modification, the radio will lose it's memories and will
  64. require 
  65. reprogramming.
